Nevertheless, if one food item unites all of Mumbai’s residents, it is unquestionably the ‘Vada Pav.’ This very easy recipe has been a favorite of many, whether they are wealthy or impoverished. Its popularity has increased enormously over the years, along with the number of people who like it.
Origin of Vada Pav:
While we may all like the dish, few of us are aware of its historical significance. Vada Pav’s journey from brain to belly is explained in detail here! Historically, a man called Ashok Vaidya is credited with introducing the Vada Pav to the city of Mumbai, and now his son Narendra Vaidya is happily carrying on the family tradition.
Ashok established a shop outside Dadar Station in the 1960s, selling just Vada and Poha, immediately across the street from a stall selling Omelette Pav. To capitalize on the growing popularity of and interest in Pav among food enthusiasts, he decided to include the Vada inside the Pav and some chutney to enhance the taste. Vada Pav was formed as a result of the popularity of this.
Despite the difficulties, Ashok made sure that his children received the most excellent possible education. Even though he was very bright in the classroom, his financial situation prevented him from continuing. Even though his Vada Pav received a lot of positive feedback, he could not turn his booth into a retail establishment.
While one would assume that his son Narendra would not have opened a store to carry on the family business, interestingly, he continues to operate outside Dadar station’s platform number 1, on the same stand stall that his father worked all those years. He has expanded the menu and offers different foods such as samosas, pakora, and other items.
In addition, it is reported that Late Balasaheb Thackeray was a lover of Ashok Vaidya’s Vada Pav and used to attend his restaurant to indulge in his delicacy. Eventually, their connection grew to the point where Thackeray requested that the BMC authorities not disturb Vaidya, ensuring that no ward officer would worry him.
Manohar Joshi and other top politicians have also praised Vaidya’s Vada Pav. The meal was served at meetings and various campaigns and rallies throughout the election campaign. The meeting with Thackeray had been scheduled before Sena’s victory in the 1995 state elections. Still, they strengthened the security around Thackeray, and Vaidya was not permitted to attend.
